About USD Coin
USD Coin (USDC) is a dollar-backed stablecoin launched in September 2018. It is issued by Circle, which says every token can be redeemed one for one for US dollars and publishes monthly attestations of its reserves.
The reserves are held in cash and short-dated US government securities. Like other stablecoins, the supply expands and contracts as tokens are minted and redeemed, and USDC runs on many blockchains.
In March 2023 USDC briefly traded well below one dollar after part of its reserves were held at a bank that failed. It returned to its peg within days, a reminder that stable does not mean risk-free.
