About Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the first decentralised digital currency. It was described in a white paper published in October 2008 under the name Satoshi Nakamoto, and the network started in January 2009. Anyone can run the open-source software, check the full transaction history and send value without an intermediary.

New bitcoin are created as a reward to miners, who compete to add blocks using proof of work. The reward halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years; the most recent halving, in April 2024, cut it to 3.125 BTC per block. The protocol caps total supply at 21 million BTC.

Because Bitcoin has the largest market capitalisation, its price movements tend to shape the rest of the market. The dominance figure on our home page shows what share of total crypto market value it currently represents.
