Smart contract platforms

About Ethereum

Ethereum is a programmable blockchain. Proposed by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and launched in July 2015, it lets developers deploy smart contracts: programs that run exactly as written on a shared network. Ether (ETH) pays for the computation those programs use.

In September 2022 Ethereum switched from proof of work to proof of stake in an upgrade known as the Merge. Validators now lock up ETH to propose and confirm blocks. Since the London upgrade in 2021, part of every transaction fee is burned, which offsets new issuance.

Many stablecoins, lending protocols, exchanges and token projects run on Ethereum or on networks that settle to it, so ETH volume often reflects activity across that wider ecosystem.
