About Cardano

Cardano is a proof of stake blockchain whose development began in 2015 under Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's co-founders. The network launched in September 2017 and its native asset is ADA.

Cardano's consensus protocol, Ouroboros, came out of academic research and was published for peer review. Smart contracts arrived with the Alonzo upgrade in September 2021.

Total ADA supply is capped at 45 billion. Holders can delegate their ADA to stake pools without giving up custody, which is why a large share of supply is typically staked.
